The things photographers go through for the perfect picture

Thursday, January 29, 2009
Today while walking home from school, in up in the twilight above the mountains that surround us here in AB was the wondrous sight of the New Moon and Venus. I booted it home and ran in to get my camera and tripod to set it up in the dark behind my unit, the unit across from me and over behind Clare's (as it was nice and dark over there).

Well, I got my ever so excellent picture of the New Moon eating Venus (looks like PacMan chasing after a dot) ... but in the process I managed to not only freeze up my tripod but my hands as well (even though I had my nice and warm gloves on with me).

Once I get my bandwidth back I'll be posting on up photos of the afternoon sky here in AB... but for now, you can head on over to The House and Other Arctic Musings to get a glimpse at what is hovering above us here in AB.

Look What the Current Dragged In

Monday, September 15, 2008
This little guy (well - not so little) as been floating back and forth between the mouth of the bay leading out to Admiralty Inlet and Adams Sound for the last couple of weeks being pushed back and forth by the currents. At least I think it's the one that has been floating back and forth between Admiralty Inlet and Adams Sound ... if not, it's a new one that has arrived in from Admiralty Inlet

I didn't have the best conditions outside while nabbing these pics - it was bitterly cold and windy - and st00pid me didn't bother grabbing a hat or pair of mittens as I didn't have much time to try to nab these before there wasn't enough light anymore.

Hopefully, the iceberg will still be there tomorrow and I can get a good shot of it during the day. Or even better, the currents bring it in closer to town :-) I can wish ... right?

Off to Victor Bay!

Sunday, September 7, 2008
Finally! The sun has decided to come out from behind the clouds this weekend which let me go for my much awaited for hike out to Victor Bay. It was a good hike out on Sunday - just a little over 2.5 km out of town (so 5km in total ... if I actually followed the road instead of going cross-tundra at times like I did). The weather was great! The sun was beaming down on me (I am attempting to soak in as much sun as I can before it goes away for the season) and the temperature was just warm enough that I was able to get out with only a thick hoodie and my watch cap.

Rest of the hike pictures here.

This is all I got for Today

Wednesday, September 3, 2008
The sun finally decided to come out from behind the clouds tonight just before my walk home .... here it is reflecting off of King George V Mountain as the fog creeps between the valley and the mountain.

I really got nothing to report on tonight ... work was great today - nice and easy going ... kids were ... well ... kids ... and I didn't have any mail :-( .

Out for a Boat Ride

Thursday, August 28, 2008
Last night a group of us teachers were taken out on a boat by a co-worker and her husband (Thanks so much Geela and Sampson! The trip out rocked!) to see if we could see the killer whales that were visiting us in the bay. Unfortunately, we did not see any whales, but we did get an excellent water tour of the area and even got to partake in some seal hunting ... well, Nick did all of the shooting, we did all of the seal watching. And, no seals were caught.

Although it was a little chilly out there on the bay when we hit the wind, it wasn't too bad. And the sun was shining down on us like there was no tomorrow.

Out for a Hike

Saturday, August 23, 2008
This morning / afternoon I grabbed my camera and ipod and headed out on a hike out to the point. It was a great hike out. The sun was shining and the weather was perfect for hiking along the water.
