Last week, on April 1, 2009 we had a day filled with games at school in celebration of Nunavut's 10th Anniversary. A great time was had by all of the students and teachers who organized the games and by the community who participated.

Traditional Inuit Clothing Day

As Darcy has already pointed out (as he beat me to the posting race) today at school was Traditional Inuit Clothing Day (er .. afternoon) as part of the celebrations of last weeks Inuktitut Language Week.
This afternoon everyone (well, for the most part) came decked out in their favorite traditional threads for a "fashion show" that was being held downstairs in the gym.

Welcome Back Sun!

On Friday we held a 'Welcome Back Sun' celebration/variety show down in the gym. Students and community members got to listen to some songs and skits prepared by our students welcoming back the sun to Arctic Bay.
Grade 1 sang 'You are my Sunshine'; Grade 2 presented a short skit on 'Where the Northern Lights come From'; Grade 3/4 sang 'Why Does The Sun Shine'; Grade 4/5 performed Bedouin Soundclash's 'When the Night Feels My Song''Grade 6/7 performed a drumming and shaking ditty to welcome back the sun;the Grade 8/9 boys performed a little sun rap; and the high school sang to 'Here Comes the Sun'.
It was a nice little variety show put on by the students, and a great time was had by all.

Hockey Afternoon in Arctic Bay

This afternoon we all (everyone in the school) went down to the arena to watch a Teacher/Staff/Community Member vs. Students (the boys hockey team - Midget I think .... grade 9+) hockey game.
Both teams 'fought' hard on the ice to claim the title of 'King of the Ice' as the school and community cheered on.
I have no idea what the final score was (and not that it really matters) as I was out in the arena lobby trying to get feeling back in my hands as I was snapping pictures during the game.
***[things that I learned while taking photos of the game: 1) I definitely need mid-range focal length lens as the ones I have were either too limited or way too much for what I needed; 2) a flash would have been pretty useful as the lighting in the arena isn't the best; 3) my camera is not the best for sports / action shots ... looks like I might be looking at investing in a Nikon in the future]

Christmas Concert 2008

This evening, we held the Inuujaq School's Christmas Concert 2008 in the gym. We had a full house and many great performances by our students at school - from our pre-school group all the way up to our high school Inuktitut class. Even us teachers performed in our own little skit for the parents and students of Arctic Bay.
I held the dual role of photographer and videographer this year (which was tricky at times) - but I made it out in one piece with 90 pictures and a full tape of footage ... now the fun part begins ... the editing process. Guess what I will be doing tomorrow morning ;-)
Tomorrow, not only marks the last day of school for the year but also Santa's arrival to school! At Christmas time, we give out Christmas gifts to each student in the school (our local DEA organizes the event). The kids love getting their gift, and we all love seeing their eyes light up when they receive it from Santa and then we watch them tear at the wrapping paper. It brings a smile to all of us. Sadly though, this gift, for some, is the only gift that they may be receiving. So it is very special to them.
AND Vacation officially begins tomorrow at 2:30pm! It is going to be a nice relaxing 14 days filled with reading (yes, I am going to get caught up on all of my 'brainless' reading), Six Feet Under (thanks Kara!!!), Dexter and what ever other DVD's Santa brings me.
I hope all of our staff heading southward to the sun, yet still chilly south (haha - it's warmer up here than down there in some places) get out on time with no weather / mechanical delays. I've been called crazy many times this month for not packing up and heading home for the holidays ... but the flight schedule, by the time I even considered looking for flights was pretty bleak (as in I could fly out Dec 23, get home early Dec 24, and then have to be back in Ottawa on Dec 28 so I can fly up North on Dec 29); IMHO, so not worth the aggravation of holiday flying and the cost. I'll just be taking a really nice trip in the summer ... or maybe getting a new MBP :-D

Yesterday afternoon during the last period of the day, we had a spur-of-the-moment, Staff vs. High School Students volley-ball match. Yes, you are reading that correctly - staff vs. students.
Around 2:45 everyone piled down into the gym to watch the chaos. I figured, ok, these high school kids are going to take our heads off with the volley-balls (as I know when I was in high school and we had anything to do with staff vs. students, we always brought out the 'big guns' and tried to inflict as much damage on our teachers as we could - usually with the purpose of revenge in mind). That didn't happen here though.
The younger grades covered the walls of the gym, watching with great interest, the game - we teachers even had a pretty impressive cheering squad from the younger kids with them yelling "teachers! teachers! teachers!" every time we scored against the high school students (it was quite cute).
We teachers made some good plays against the high school students (I don't think they thought we had it in us :-) ), and likewise, they made some pretty good plays against us too. Don't really know who won, but everyone left with a smile on their face.
I did have a camera down in the gym for pictures, and I'll post them as soon as I get back to school (as I left the camera there).

Halloween in Arctic Bay

On Friday afternoon (October 31, 2008) we held our Halloween Celebration / Activity Afternoon. It all kicked off in the gym with the "parade of fright" where all of the students and community members gathered down in the gym to "show-off" their costumes. There were plenty of scary costume to be seen. A great time was had by all and there were plenty of activities upstairs in the classrooms for kids to participate in too for the afternoon.

Hike Up King George V Mountain

Today, as part of year end activities, myself, Monty, Darcy and Nick took grades 7-12 for a hike up King George V Mountain today.
The hike was fairly uneventful, as many of us took our time climbing the mountain; although, some brave youngin's ran up the steep hills to get to the top.
I had never been up King George when there was no snow (last time I was there was when we went skidooing).
The view from up the mountain was spectacular.
In all it was a great trip out for the students, and for us teachers - where else do you get paid to hike a mountain?

Helping the Earth get a Little Greener

Today at school, as part of our end of year activities, this morning we had a huge garbage clean up bonanza on the school grounds, along the main road and along the shore line.
The students did a fantastic job - collecting and filling over 70 HUGE garbage bags full of garbage that has been unveiled from the meting snow.
Way to go!
In the afternoon we had a BBQ with hot dogs and juice picnic hosted by the Hamlet for the students and community members and a movie that we projected onto the wall using the LCD projector in the gym for the students once the picnic was finished.

It is going to be a very special day at school tomorrow afternoon (no, we aren't getting out early) .... but we are having a very important celebration at school.
Kindergarten Graduates Tomorrow! (Cheer!!!!)
I've quite enjoyed my time working with Kindergarten this year as they are like little sponges .. they soak everything up so quickly! And I love it when they come running after me when I'm trying to talk home, or out on my nightly run just to give me a great big hug... and to tell me what they had for supper or what they found while out playing.
So, Congrats to you Kindergarten! You did it! Have fun in Grade 1 next year!

Well.. I'm back off in the air again Tuesday to Iqaluit where I will be supervising two of my students at the Skills Canada Nunavut competition this up coming week.
Not too sure yet if I will be traveling with the laptop .. so the blog might be quiet for the next week ... but I will be back with stories and pictures!

Christmas Time at School

The past two days have been BUSY here in Arctic Bay. Thursday was busy with our Christmas concert dress rehearsal followed by the show later in the evening. Everything went very smoothly and the kids did an excellent job performing infront of family, friends, and community members.
After the students were done singing their songs, preforming their skits or showing us some new dance moves, it was the teacher's turn to dazzle and surprise.
Santa didn't stand much of a chance against us teachers.

Book Fair

Last week at school (Nov. 26 - 30) we had a Scholastic Book Fair. It was quite a busy week and busy nights for us book fair volunteers who helped out Nick and April with set up, supervision and tear down. We all had fun.... and bought a lot of books (well, the teachers did :-) ).
Skills Canada Cardboard Qamutiik Races

Today at school we had a cardboard qamutiik competition sponsored by Skills Canada. Students from grades 6+ were able to participate in building a cardboard qamutiik and race it against other qamutiiks built by others in the school on a track that Darcy and Nick made up on the baseball field near by the school.
For those of you down south who have no idea what a qamutiik is, it is a sled that is pulled by either sled dogs or by snowmobiles. Qamutiiks are made of wood. Qamutiiks have two skies. People use qamutiiks when they go camping and often pull qamutiiks when using skidoos. Children can make small qamutiiks for sliding. Sometimes people build little cabins on a qamutiik for added shelter.
