Sunrise in Arctic Bay

Here is a glimpse at the sky a good three hours before the sun 'officially' rises in Arctic Bay - although, we still won't see it here in town for another five days as it doesn't quite make it above the mountains that surround us here.

According to environment Canada, sunrise will be occurring at 12:20pm and sunset will be occurring at 13:28pm for a grand total of 68 minutes of 'sunlight'.

Here Comes the Sun

Exciting times here in the North! School has started up again ... and... wait for it ... the sun is beginning to make its presence known! Over the last couple of days we've been having an ever increasing pink glow on the horizon - which can mean only one thing ... we are exiting from the dark side of the moon!

When I woke up this morning, it was just beginning to get light outside (9:30 AM). Being curious, and having nothing better to do on a Saturday when it's -24 degrees outside, I thought it would be interesting to photograph the days 'light' progression.

You are now entering the twilight zone

Yesterday was the last day that I would see the sun for a long time. Now, as we enter the dark season, the sun won't quite make it up above the mountains here due to the way that the Earth has now rotated in relation to the sun. We still will "see" the effects of the sun for a couple more weeks (ie: we can see its reflection against the clouds), but that ball of fire way up in the sky has disappeared for now... not to be seen again for two months.

Early Riser Pictures

Ok, so maybe not an early riser to southern standards ... but 9:15 am is early here in the North. This morning, before the town got too busy and I had students following me around asking to use my camera, I got up early to snap some pictures of both the moonset and sunrise. Not to often a gal from the South gets to see both the moonset and the sunrise in the same time span.
