No one down south believes me when I say "Oh, this costs xyz in the Arctic". Well, everyone, here's some more proof of the costs of some of my favorite food staples and a couple of other things thrown in for fun.
Six cans of frozen Minute Made juice Anyone? Price in the South = 5.99 - 7.99$
Yummy .... Chocolate Ice Cream Price in the South = 4.99 - 6.99$
Fresh squeezed Tropicana OJ, not from Concentrate Price in the South = 2.99 - 3.99$
Yea. We all love the Northern. Say it with me now. WE LOVE THE NORTHERN. :) (For those of you who don't know me, SHAME ON YOU, and my super sexy hubby is a manager of a Northern here in Saskatchewan). So again. Say it with me. WE.LOVE.THE.NORTHERN. the end. :)
I have nothing against the Northern - I LOVE the Northern cause with out them, I'd only be eating rice and raisins. I understand why prices are the way they are (things are brought up via cargo on planes .... price of fuel ... yaddiyada-yada).
The Co-Op just didn't have price tags in their shelves :-(
And yes Clare, the kitty litter is that expensive. I laughed.
That must be one hellaciously big bag of kitty litter. Or at least I hope it is.
I actually did a phone survey last week asking what I thought of the Northern. I said mostly nice things...;)
And I like the Northern if, for no other reason, then they deliver our seal lift right into our apartment. No going to beaches, no breaking down large containers. Heaven.
It's not that big of a pail of kitty litter. It's one of those 10KG buckets of Scoopable litter. All I can think of is that the Northern was charged a shitload on the cargo fare to get this up here.
Holy cow! Being a "southerner", I knew that prices were higher up there, but I had no idea that it was that much of a difference! Thanks for the education.
After spending six years living and teaching in the Canadian Arctic (Nunavut and Yukon), I returned to the Maritimes to work at my Alma Mater, The University of New Brunswick, as the Media Lab Supervisor with the Centre for Enhanced Teaching and Learning. At the Media Lab I help faculty and students learn how to use instructional and media technology in their classes and projects.

I just had a client tell me they saw a box of Kitty Litter at the Northern for over $100.
