It's a good thing my students are as patient with me as I am with them.
In our journey together in learning English, they (in particuliar my grade 3s and 4s) have taken it upon themselves to teach me some of the same words in Inuktitut. So, with any luck, what they are teaching me is the actual word ... and not something else.
So, with out further ado, the words that they have taught me so far, that I can kinda use:
Hello = ai
Yes = ii
Pencil = titiraut
Paper = pappiala or titirarviksait
Eraser = allaijaiti
Shoe = kamik or isigaujaq
Boot = kamik
Mittens = aaqqat
What's up = suvaa
Story = unikkausiq
Good Morning = ullaakut
Bye = tagvauvutit
Homework = takujauvviksami tungaani pilirijaksait-piliriaksat (this one takes time to say)
Colour (something) = tauttuliuqpaa
Friend = inuuqati or piqataq or piqati
Neighbour = inuuqati
Mother = anaana or amaamak
Father = ataata
Brother = ani
Sister = mitsiaqati
Elder = avasirngulik
Let's just say, getting the pronunciation on these down is a challenge. But, I am getting there.. ever so slowly.
So long and Goodby
