Dear Canada Post / First Air

Monday, November 24, 2008
Why oh why must you ALWAYS bangle up my mail? I can understand the odd magazine getting a little bumped, scuffed and ripped. But boxes that are taped up like there is no tomorrow? Or even boxes that are nicely taped up? We pay big bucks to mail stuff from down here (and on the flip side, even bigger bucks to get it up here most of the time).

All that I ask for is that my mail make it to me undamaged - that includes the box. Oh, and can we also add the condition that it hasn't been opened by any one along the way (other than Customs?).

And can you also explain to me, how a package mailed to me from NJ USA (via regular USPS) can make it here in record time (it was mailed on the 15th, and arrived here on the 22nd) and yet an express post envelope from Iqaluit takes three weeks to arrive in Arctic Bay?

As much as I love to rant at the mail delivery here, and as much as Canada Post is ultimately responsible, I do believe that most of the blame for the abuse falls directly into the lap of the air carriers. For us that pretty much means First Air.

Canada Post should be cracking the whip over their heads a lot more than they do, but ultimately parcels sit really far down on the priority scale for what goes on a plane. How in the god they manage to screw up Express Post is beyond me. I love when I get four consecutive issues of the home town weekly newspaper at the same time.

True true Clare. And I agree, Canada Post does need to crack that whip at First Air.

hehehe I bet they ran out of seats on First Air and one of the guys used your box as a seat!

Also ask why it is taking so long for your envelope to arrive here! Nothing in the mail today. Hopefully Wednesday!

Oh I feel the pain...but it truly is all First Air. Let us also not forget about the dudes that are unloading the plane...you know the ones that just drop boxes from the plane to the ground, then play basketball with your box.

Another small point. Canada Post can open your mail to inspect it, to ensure that it doesn't have non mailable items, but there is supposed to be a notice to you that that was done. I don't think it can be done just randomly but I'm not sure.

Non mailable items include dangerous goods, illegal items, money, and liquor.

And I was briefly one of those cargo guys at First Air (I know, everyone has skeletons in their closet). I never once saw anyone purposely abuse a package. But things do get dropped, heavy packages get loaded on top of light ones on occasion and cargo shifts. What can I say, shifts happen.

I think we don't often enough make our complaints known to Canada Post, and perhaps we need to do that more so the whip does get cracked more often.

By way of full disclosure I come from a long line of postal people. My Grandfather, father and brother all were/are postmasters back home.

Oh Oh, one more thing. With things like Express Post, there are service delivery standards (should arrive by date). When those are exceeded the person who mailed it can get a refund.

Okay, last comment I promise. Did you happen to notice the amount of the postage for your parcel. It wasn't damaged, it was being exorcised!

Haha - Clare, that is the amusing part that I am trying to figure out right now.

USPS Cost - 6.66$ (hehe - I just got that right now .. what makes it even more funny was that there was a NJ Devils jersey inside)

Yet, some how this little box manages to get a PRIORITY POST Priority courier sticker. Like hun? We both figured this box would take eons to get here as everything else takes for ever. What gives there? All I know is that I won't be getting that special service when I mail the box of goodies down there!

Canada post lost two of my packages. The first one never even made it. I told the sender to send me a second package, and that one never made it either. Neither package never made it back to the sender. Pretty fucked up. They are on strike now so they cannot investigate. They are attempting to send me a 3rd package via purolator. Hopefully they won't fuck it up either.

It's scary that some of my mail goes missing like it does.

Got that right Sleeping Tiger. This was the second attempt at getting this package to me (the other one is somewhere's in mail land .. along with the package that I sent down too). And does CP know where they packages are? Nope!

well, i'm just glad it got there. funny to see how banged up it was...damn..thank god i only put a jersey in there, and not a glass vase or something.

actually, another funny thing...you should have seen the person's face who was working at the post office when i gave her the zip code for arctic bay...i said it, and she looked at me...and goes "did you say X?" i said "yeah, this is going to nunavut canada"..and she goes "write it down on the box please", which is why you see it written on the box. i mean, i'm familiar with the canadian postal codes, and not phased by it, but wouldn't you think a postal worker would be even more familiar? guess not :)

Haha - it always amazes me Ryan. I remember going down to the LLB depot down in Bangor and they were like "Nunavut? Where is that?" (uh... duh, Canada :-) ).

At least we do get our chuckles out of it though.

i did pay for priority shipping on that, seeing as how it was so cheap..i figured why not. that's the only reason i can explain it getting there so fast. other than that, makes no sense. i imagine customs opened it, saw it was a devils jersey, got upset, and threw it against the wall ;)

looking forward to some extreme northern goodies!!

anything else uniquely USA or NJ i can send up...let me know

Holy cow! I all of the sudden love USPS! That is cheap for priority post! Wait till you see the shipping charges from Canada - you'll flip. But, at least we have the better tasting Doritos (hehe).

Ryan said...

you sure do have better doritos...ahhh,=...zesty fromage...spicy chili heat...and the others...damn, you guys have like 12 varieties we don't even have :)

A couple years ago I picked up a parcel with a hole so big in the top of it I thought I'd be able to just climb right in with a flashlight to see how bad the damage was......seriously it was a BIG hole and i could actually fit both arms in it.

Gee... who else do we know that has had that problem recently ;-)
